This book distills best practice approaches to basin planning in large and complex basins and provides an overview of the emerging good practice. Growing competition for scarce water resources has driven major changes in the way river basin planning is undertaken. Those agreements as well as other colonial era agreements regarding the river have been disputed by the upper basin nations that are the sources of the Nile's waters; they regard the treaties as a vestige of colonialism and invalid. In the Nile Basin Initiative was established by the basin nations to develop the river in a cooperative manner.

The Nile River Basin covers the whole Nile Basin and is based on the results of three major research projects supported by the Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF). It provides unique and up-to-date insights on agriculture, water resources, governance, poverty, productivity, upstream-downstream linkages, innovations, future plans and.   The Niger River Basin, home to million people, is a vital yet complex asset for West and Central Africa. It is the continent's third largest river basin, traversing nine countries―Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria. The River embodies both these nations' livelihoods and their geopolitics.
